Redsox Padres Trade Rumor Update

The Padres, according to an industry source with direct knowledge of the negotiations, are now offering second baseman Mark Loretta to the Red Sox and are asking for Wells and catcher Doug Mirabelli

that's a shitty trade for the Padres...an old pitcher and a backup catcher for their starting 2B?

the last rumor I heard before this one came out was McAnulty for Wells straight up.

How did the price tag on our end suddenly go up?

That trade just doesn't work either way. The Red Sox may as well just trade Wakefield if they'll trade Mirabelli (Wake's ERA went up to about 10 IIRC when Belli went on the DL) and Loretta's more valuable than that group.

A) Loretta's 34 but he's still a very good player when healthy
B) Mirabelli has been Wake's personal catcher for several years, Wake will need time to break in a new one, and Mirabelli can hit

With those two things considered, why would SD do this?

If they get Loretta for Mirabelli, as much as I love Belli as a player, it's pretty damn near close to trade rape.

Yeah, that's pretty one sided. Nothing like a trade where you can get a guy who was the best 2B in baseball in 2004 (and still good in 2005, but his power was sapped by injury or something) for a backup, albeit good, catcher.

I wouldn't be shocked, with Hoffman staying that something like Otsuka for Wells came up again, but we'll see.

Even Loretta called the trade "fairly lopsided", and Dave Roberts told him that he had no idea what he was getting into, to the extent that every night at Fenway was like a playoff game in SD.

I like this trade in spite of hating to see Belli got anywhere. I hope to see Loretta pepper the monster and hit several between Sheff and Bernie/Bubba to the wall.
