On Sunday, he began having serious misgivings about staying on. A leading contributing factor, according to sources close to the situation, was a column in Sunday’s Boston Globe in which too much inside information about the relationship between Epstein and his mentor, team president and CEO Larry Lucchino, was revealed -- in a manner slanted too much in Lucchino’s favor. Epstein, according to these sources, had several reasons to believe Lucchino was a primary source behind the column and came to the realization that if this information were leaked hours before Epstein was going to agree to a new long-term deal, it signaled excessive bad faith between he and Lucchino.

Where do we go from here?

There are options. Depodesta, Towers, Gillick, Hunsicker, Sabean (SF employed, so that's likely out, only mention him due to locality).

Please take Dan O' Brien hes better than all those guys and would likely be willing to come up to Boston since he doesnt know if the new owners in Cincy would want to keep him .

might they go after Beane? Depo wouldnt be to bad, I guess. Im shocked right now. Im also pissed about this newspaper leak.

They could likely try again, but if Beane wouldn't leave last time, I don't think he would (or should) this time.

Just get someone competent. I'll even take someone like Towers (SD) or Depo (just to see what he can do with time).

Saw Gammons on SC, he says the most of the front office is likely to go to AZ.

Beane is a part owner of the A's now, so I don't think he's going anywhere...

Yep, Byrnes is there now, and without Epstein, they'll follow #2.

Simply put, the Sox are screwed. I hate saying that, but it's true. I fear the Sox will go into another Dan Duquette era (6th best AL team, lots of offense, no pitching, farm system gone, GM disarray) and the yesmen will take over. ****ing A.

I'm glad we got one WS out of Epstein before he left.

    Depends

Cheap in Money: Nope, they met what Theo wanted in terms of $
Cheap in terms of class: Yep. For sure. I have no animosity towards Theo, it's inexplicable that they run the architect of a WS team out of town.

Cheap all the way around. Theo did something no other GM has done and got people from jumping off bridges to going to the promiseland. Byrnes is rumored to go to the Dbacks which I wouldn't blame him at this point. DePodesta would be a bad choice. Sabean would be good for the Sox but he won't leave SF til Bonds leaves.

You guys give him to much credit for the WS. He deserves credit for improving the minor league systems, but c'mon! He had Manny, Damon, Pedro, Lowe, Tek, Wakefield, Nixon, and others. The only 3 players he added that helped a lot were Schilling, Foulke, and Ortiz. The A's revived Foulke's career and the Sox only signed him because of that fact. Schilling was expected to do well, but they got lucky w/ Ortiz, so IMHO he only gets credit for Ortiz as Schilling wanted out of AZ and was already established. But to say Theo "built" the champs is crazy as the majority of players were already there.
