Red Sox Red Sox acquire Melancon

Not a bad deal at all for the Sox. They only give up an injury prone infielder and a 25 year old that's shown zilch at the big league level.

The Boston Red Sox have traded infielder Jed Lowrie and pitcher Kyle Weiland to the Houston Astros for relief pitcher Mark Melancon, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

Weiland has good stuff... was rushed up this year... but he'll be an above-average NL Central starter... and Lowrie will be solid as well.

I like the deal for both sides

Also of note this opens a 40 man roster spot and trades away SP depth (Yu Darvish bid?)

I also think this is a fair trade for both sides. Melancon really showed how good he could be as a reliever last year. Melancon was apart of the Berkman trade and will now get a chance to shut down his former Yankee team down in the late innings. Lowrie will replace Barmes.

Except he'll be pitching in the AL West.

    After next year, anyway

Red Sox signed Punto for 2 years, $3 million. Looks like him and Aviles will be duking it out for utility role.
