There is no precedent. Teams allow employees to take promotions. They expect compensation for lateral movement. Ozzie going from manager of the White Sox to Marlins? Compensation is expected.

Theo is taking a promotion. Unless it's to a division rival you allow them to move on. You don't see compensation for guys going from bench coach to manager, assistant GM to GM, or GM to president. Theo has done a lot for Boston. Why they tried to get in his way is beyond me. Theo is now President of the Cubs. The new GM is Jed Hoyer. The Padres deserve compensation because it's a lateral movement. The precedent set by Ozzie would apply.

Also Boston has asked for better prospects than those given up by the Marlins. They wanted guys like Brett Jackson and Trey McNutt.

You're not paying attention DMZ. They may be calling Theo the "President of Baseball Operations" but in reality he's the "de facto GM"

Jed Hoyer is just a figure head.

It's all so clear to me now! Hoyer had me fooled. I never thought he'd leave his job in San Diego, where he's an actual GM, to go give the appearance of a GM in Chicago. I'm glad we had this talk. De facto GMing is so complicated.

That's not true DMB... Hasn't been that way with promotions for years (see FLA, see LAD, see ARI, see BOS) in fact some teams don't even let them talk...

If you don't think Theo will have final say on day to day operations your mad...

Looks at your own poll... It doesn't say will Houwr lead them to a WS, it says will Epstein lead them

Only reason he doesn't have GM title is so they can keep Castro

Admit it, "President of Baseball Operations" is an office that the Cubs created specifically to get around compensation rules for poaching Theo (or so they thought). The Cubs' Team President is still Kenney.

No. Kenny is just on the business side. That's if he's still around.

Of course Theo has the final say. That's the nature of his new position and nobody's disputing that

Hoyer didn't have the final say in San Diego either, but he's still the GM in Chicago like he was in San Diego.

Doesn't matter who's more valuable, the two scenarios are not the same.

Also because somebody else was hired as the GM.

It very well may be but that doesn't make it not a different position, nor does it make it not a position many clubs use.

It also doesn't make Jed Hoyer not the GM.

So Theo will just be the baseball czar for the Cubs. How is that much different from his role as the top dog on the baseball side for Boston?
