Looks like the Cubs are calling Boston's bluff. I'm reading that the chances of this getting done before the World Series are slimming.

67% of ESPNBoston readers think the Red Sox should ask the world and walk away if we don't get it... I agree, obviously Garza wasn't happening but we'll get a good return...

And if we pay him 8 mil at least we got a world-class GM still... win-win for us

The Red Sox aren't going to walk away. Neither are the Cubs.

Lol, you guys are missing the point... its a win-win for us... why wouldn't we ask for a lot? We don't lose anything if Theo stays our GM... you act like Theo has to go... he doesn't have to go anywhere

No, you lose 8 million. He doesn't have to go anywhere, but it wouldn't help the Red Sox (read: Lucchino's) rep as reasonable people.

Billy Beane was going to cost a package headlined by Youkilis... whats not reasonable about 2-3 top specs?

Why would Theo return with Cherrington already in place? Theo has no reason to return plus he's already left the team once and surely would do it again. The Red Sox are a mess right now from a PR standpoint. It's not a win-win at all.

You damn Red Sox fans keep insisting that this is the same situation. Beane was under contract for 6 more years! As opposed to Theo being under contract for one. This is a promotion, opposed to being a lateral move.

Also let me add that at that time, Beane was an innovator. He was worth 2/3 top prospects because he was heads above everyone else. Nobody played the GM game like he did. Remember the movie that just came out last month? Time has changed since then. People have picked up his strategy since.

Why would Theo want to go back there? He already made up his mind with his family that Chicago was where they wanted to go. The Red Sox walking away kills the promotion, and forces him to stick around a year longer than he wants to.

Do you think your owner/president wants a 8M lame duck GM, twiddling his thumbs until after the 2012 season so he can jump off that sinking ship?

Theo doesn't get a choice in the matter lol... and they'll offer him 5 yrs/ 35 mil and he'll sign... He hasn't left the team yet... he's agreed to leave because he hasn't gotten a long-term offer in Boston... he'll just spin it as staying home... you guys are trying to overreact here... this isn't that big of a deal if he comes back... Boston gets it and thats all that matters really

If he was getting 8 mil it'd be part of a long-term deal... guarantee you Boston gets a great haul or it walks away...

You got some money? Let's make a bet.

But first I wanna hear what your definition of a "great haul" is. And I don't wanna hear "2-3 top tier prospects" again. A little more specific, please.

Is that a fact, or just your assumption? I'm guessing the latter.

Of course Theo has a choice in the matter!! What's a stupid comment to make as he has already left the team before. He has stated in the past that he wants to do something else outside of baseball and can pretty much do anything he wants to do. He's agreed to go to Chicago because he WANTS to go to Chicago. It's very clear he is not wanted in Boston and he has no reason to go back. Only a moron would go back to a situation where you have been insulted and already have your position filled. Does Theo seem like a fool to you? Obviously not. Boston won't get any major haul as you and your nation are praying for because that's all it is, living on a prayer.
