the point is there's more to the GM's job than free agency. all that matters is whether or not he can build a winning team, even if he may be weak in some aspects of his job. you wouldn't call Adrian overrated because he can't run, would you?

Does not being a "5-tool" player make him overrated?

    Re: Theo to Chicago Cubs

Theo Epstein has resigned as general manager of the Red Sox to join the Cubs as president of baseball operations.
    This from the Red Sox:

The Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs jointly announce this evening that, effective immediately, Theo Epstein has resigned from the Red Sox in order to become the new President of Baseball Operations for the Cubs. The clubs also have reached an agreement regarding a process by which appropriate compensation will be determined for the Red Sox and that issue will be resolved in the near term.

Both the Red Sox and the Cubs intend to hold press events on Tuesday, October 25 during which the Cubs intend to announce Mr. Epstein, and the Red Sox intend to announce his successor as General Manager.

Out of respect for the World Series, both clubs have agreed to forego further comment until Tuesday, the next scheduled non-game day.

And just to show this is coming from both sides:

Joint statement from the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs | cubs.com: Official Info

Also, people are saying that no compensation has been agreed to yet, which is kind of puzzling. Maybe people are just saying that because nobody from within the negotiations are saying anything.

Maybe Selig said enough with this BS and said he'd arbitrate it

Hearing: Cherington and Epstein will try to complete compensation deal in next few days. If not, Selig could step in and act as arbitrator.

Seriously, then why did this take so long?! Why couldn't they have just done this yesterday, and given us the press conference today?!

Why the rush? It's not like they need to start working on offseason aquisitions ASAP.

Why back down? We obviously got the resolution we wanted. They definitely can't walk away now.

Agreed. I think it's a hell of a lot better than Ricketts/Kenney vs. Henry/Luchino(or however you spell his name).

I blame Boston for all of this. It's cool they're getting compensation, but they wanted guys like Castro, Garza, and Jackson. I think a San Diego newspaper put it best:

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2...her-not-far-b/

If Hoyer were to leave Petco Park for Wrigley Field, he would be making a lateral move only in terms of his title. The Cubs’ 2011 Opening Day payroll exceeded $125 million, more than 2½ times what Hoyer had to spend this season. Beyond that, there’s the challenge of overcoming more than a century of Cubs’ frustrations, to reverse the Curse of the Billy Goat, and to bring Steve Bartman out of hiding.

Because the Diamondbacks are obligated to pay Byrnes through the 2015 season, the Padres could promote him and be responsible for only a portion of his paycheck (the precise portion subject to negotiation with Arizona). That discount, plus the elimination of Hoyer’s salary, could conceivably result in seven-figure savings for the Padres.

This is not to suggest the Padres would let Hoyer leave simply to cut costs, but neither should financial motives be irrelevant to the discussion. If Moorad regards Hoyer and Byrnes as roughly equivalent — and particularly if he holds a higher opinion of Byrnes — there’s no good reason to stand in Hoyer’s way save stubbornness.

Should Theo Epstein pursue Byrnes instead of Hoyer — and that’s certainly possible — permission is unnecessary. Baseball’s standard practice is to allow executives to accept promotions from other clubs with no strings attached. That practice is not universal — the Red Sox have insisted on compensation for Epstein despite the Cubs’ offer of a bigger job — but the Padres tend to choose cooperation over coercion.

For better or worse, Jeff Moorad is no Larry Lucchino.

The Padres would be entitled to expect compensation for Hoyer, but it’s doubtful they would demand it. Moorad is friendly with Cubs owner Tom Ricketts, and arranged for him to meet with both Hoyer and Byrnes on the last day of the regular season. Under a previous administration, the Padres did not seek compensation when the San Francisco Giants poached manager Bruce Bochy in 2006.

As a general rule, you don’t want to get too cozy with your competition. But neither do you want to obstruct employees from career advancement on a bigger stage. Unless, of course, it’s Adrian Gonzalez.
    ===========================================
It was known from the start that Theo was getting presidency. When news of the actual deal broke the national media said GM. Before that it was known they wanted him for to be president. So bottom line this was a promotion to a position that would never be made available for him in Boston. Usually once you allow permission you just allow the guy to move on and advance in his career. Various reports said Larry had hurt feelings, and was dragging this out to basically spite Theo. Glad it's finally over so both teams can move on. Only in a situation of lateral movement such as Ozzie Guillen from White Sox to Marlins manager do you usually demand compensation.

Agreed. I was preaching that the whole time in this thread, and on another forum I post at. It's just too damn bad that they will actually get a couple of players out of this. From now on that's going to be the precedent for situations like this. Although, I still believe it's going to be less than what Boston fans expect.
