Red Sox Matsuzaka to have TJ surgery

Yahoo's Tim Brown reports that Daisuke Matsuzaka is leaning towards undergoing Tommy John surgery after Dr. Lewis Yocum found a significant tear in the pitcher's elbow and recommended the procedure.
ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes is reporting the same thing. It contradicts what we've heard before, as Red Sox manager Terry Francona said earlier Wednesday that "everything is kind of the same" as far as Yocum's diagnosis compared to the previous one. The manager indicated that Dice-K would likely go the non-surgical route, though he did say the options were still being discussed. It would obviously hurt the Sox' depth if Matsuzaka goes under the knife, but Alfredo Aceves is probably a better option for the rotation at this point.
Matsuzaka has been a huge bust for the Red Sox considering the money they shelled out for this guy. I think I can speak for Sox Nation when I say he won't be missed.

Boston had to be aware that Dice K was being used a lot in Japan. Why would they spend 30 Mill just to talk to the guy?

Probably the same reason the Mets spent a lot on Kaz Matsui, thinking he would be better than Ichiro.

Were the Yankees in the mix for Dice-K? I know the Empire and the Nation like to jack up the prices on players they're after (whether they're truly after them or not)

51million was the bidding price to talk to him.

How underrated of a signing does Hiroki Kuroda look compared to Matsu-sucka?

The whole bidding for the rights to talk to a player is insane to me. I know teams will do it (mostly the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Cubs), but the amount of money these Japanese guys have got is ridculous. I can't think of one of these players other than Ichiro that has really become a super star in the states, not even Godzilla.
