Red Sox signed C Jason Varitek to a one-year, $2 million contract.
The deal also includes about $300,000 in performance-based bonuses. Varitek might have been able to score a bigger contract from the Dodgers or some other club, but he's played all 13 of his major league seasons in Boston and the Red Sox want him to continue mentoring Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The 38-year-old Varitek batted .232/.293/.473 over 112 at-bats in 2010.
The Red Sox definitely needed someone to share time with Salty. Salty has never come close to a season like he had his rookie year in Atlanta but he has come a long way with his defense. Smart move but the Sox even if its a million too much.
