    Red Sox Bard Released

Red Sox released catcher Josh Bard.
Bard entered camp as the favorite to back up Jason Varitek, but much like 2006 the Red Sox have decided to go in another direction. George Kottaras now appears likely to claim the No. 2 catcher job after having more success corralling Tim Wakefield's knuckleball, although Doug Mirabelli is always just a phone call away.
Extremely odd signing in the first place. They traded him away because he couldn't handle the knuckler and then signed him to catch the knuckler. The Twins and Marlins should be giving Bard a call later tonight.

This signing was made in case of these factors:
    1) Tek didn't resign
    2) Kotteras wasn't ready to catch the knuckleball

At the time it made sense, especially cause most didn't think Tek was returning, I hope for all the best for Bard
