Red Sox Saux Given The Byrd

Red Sox acquired RHP Paul Byrd from the Indians for a player to be named later or cash.
With Tim Wakefield hurting and Clay Buchholz struggling, the Red Sox went out and got a veteran starter for the stretch run. Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA and the 37-year-old will be a free agent after the season. With Charlie Zink scheduled to start in Wakefield's place Wednesday, the Red Sox could either bump him from the rotation after one outing or replace Buchholz, who's scheduled to pitch Friday. For the Indians, Aaron Laffey is the obvious choice to replace Byrd in the rotation after having some success earlier this season.
I have heard that Buchholtz was going to be sent down so this makes sense. Well, kind of. Colon is close to coming back so I guess this is a backup plan for Wakefield. Byrd has been pitching very well lately after coaches forced Byrd to start throwing inside. Coaches took a lot of balls in the ass and shoulders in order for him to gain confidence in the inside pitch but it did work. I like the move.

Good move, and they got him for probably VERY little. Pretty darn good trade by the Sox.

Byrd has an ERA under 2 since the all star break.

LOL I thought one was plenty, and I'm a Sox fan!!!!!

This is a very good move by the Sox though. Can never have too much pitching for the home stretch. Bucholz clearly needs more time in the minors, he appears to me that there's a good chance he'll be joining the likes of VonEschelman and Casey Fossum (supposed "can't miss" pitching prospects that never amounted to a hill of you know what). Wakefield has a history of missing a lot of time the last couple of months, at least in the past couple of years. And, Colon, well you just never know with him... He might choke on a twinky trying to eat it to fast or something. I don't forsee any problems finding starts for Byrd, and the price should be bargain basement cheap.

I had high hopes for Fossum too.
