The most expensive get even more expensive

Boston Red Sox - Red Sox raise ticket prices 9 percent - The Boston Globe

The Red Sox, who already have the most expensive tickets in baseball, are raising prices again, this time by 9 percent, in an effort to keep up with a familiar target: the Yankees.

A little more than two weeks after the Red Sox won their second World Series in four seasons, the team decided it needed more revenue to fund everything from Fenway Park improvements to free agents to draftees. And the Sox are determined to pass much of the expense on to the fans, some of whom might still be unpacking their bags from Cleveland and Colorado.

"It's pretty disgusting, but I'm not surprised," said Jon Freedman, who has had a pair of season tickets, loge box seats along third base, since 1987. "But you know, if I don't buy them, there are at least 1,000 people who will."
Sadly, that guy is right. I think it's ridiculous. And it's part of the reason my Dad and I try to travel to a new ball park every year now instead of going to Fenway (4 out of the past 5 years). I hope to get to Philadelphia or to the new Washington stadium this coming summer. If I go to any Red Sox games, it'll be for the cheap seats for sure. It's even more ridiculous when you see the same tickets on eBay and such for even more. I know it's like that with all of them, but since the Sox are so high to begin with it, it's even worse.

If the Red Sox doubled the prices, would anyone give their tickets up? How big does the increase have to be for a season-ticket holder not to re-up?

Price Gouging and Taking Advantage of "Loyal" Fans

They've raised price every year for over the last 10 years...no one else has done that.

Another thing about the Red Sox that is REALLY is testing my allegiance. I'm a born and bred Red Sox fan. Father is from Brockton, MA. Never have followed another club in my life, but the trend of the Red Sox bleeding there fans of every penny they can is REALLY getting tired.

Well, that's because you've never met me. Until last weekend, the last time I paid for a movie ticket was to see X-2.

The McCourts already had raised the cheapest ticket from $6 to $10 to accomodate their new 10,000 square-foot mansion, and the prices for 2008 "have not yet been determined", which basically means they want us to again bend over for them as the reward for passing the 4 million mark again.

    So, in short, yes.

Honestly, if the Sox use that money to bring in a WS Title in 2008 like they did in 2004 and 2007, I can't complain.

Of course, I haven't actually been to Fenway in a decade, so...

See that doesn't work for me. Mainly because the revenue they get from tickets sales is MINIMUM compared to the television deal, NESN, etc., etc.. As someone who takes a yearly trip to Fenway for a weekend series, I'm on a tight budget as it is. Getting tickets at face value (which is HARD) isn't a huge win if they keep hiking up the price tag on them.
