Red Sox look to be interesting in extending Varitek:
My take: Catcher in the RyeThe Providence Journal reports that "the Red Sox would like to talk to Jason Varitek about a contract extension" before the start of spring training.
Varitek has one season remaining on the four-year, $40 million deal that he signed in 2004, but his price figures to be significantly lower now, as he's turning 36 in April. While it seems the Red Sox would prefer to keep him beyond 2008, they would like to be able to reduce his workload a bit by pairing him with a more effective second catcher than Doug Mirabelli.
