Red Sox look to be interesting in extending Varitek:

The Providence Journal reports that "the Red Sox would like to talk to Jason Varitek about a contract extension" before the start of spring training.
Varitek has one season remaining on the four-year, $40 million deal that he signed in 2004, but his price figures to be significantly lower now, as he's turning 36 in April. While it seems the Red Sox would prefer to keep him beyond 2008, they would like to be able to reduce his workload a bit by pairing him with a more effective second catcher than Doug Mirabelli.

The Sox would be out of their ****ing mind not to bring back Varitek.

I don't know what they are thinking, but they need to be grooming someone to take Tek's place, not offering him extensions. The contract he's under now was a mistake. His best year's are behind him.

Red Sox acquired RHP David Aardsma from the White Sox for RHP Willy Mota and RHP Miguel Socolovich.
A nice pickup for a team in need of bullpen depth. Aardsma has fanned 85 in 85 1/3 innings over the last two years, though he's also walked 45 batters in that time. He still has the potential to develop into a fine long-term setup man. Because he's out of options, there's a good chance he'll make the team. The White Sox are picking up a couple of long shots in return. Mota, a converted outfielder, had a 2.60 ERA in 27 innings for SS Single-A Lowell last season in his mound debut. Socolovich, a 21-year-old out of Venezuela, had a 4.07 ERA in 15 starts and 24 relief appearances in the low minors the last two years.
Finally the Red Sox make a deal this offseason!! Aardsma can do no worse than Gagne did last year. I think Aardsma can make this team and be a nice guy to bring in for a couple of outs. If used correctly, he can do some good.
