Jermaine Dye to switch from one Sox to the other?

Interesting to say the least, I think the asking price is too high for Dye who many will likely be evaluating based on last year's performance, but then again I am a Wily Mo fan.

a major league source said a short time ago that chances were “pretty good” that the Red Sox would complete a deal with the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Jermaine Dye.

In exchange for Dye, the White Sox would get Wily Mo Pena and one of either minor league pitcher Justin Masterson or Sox reliever Manny Delcarmen.

Where the hell are they going to play him? With Crisp in CF, Drew in RF, Manny in LF, Ortiz at DH, and Youk at 1B...doesn't make a lot of sense to me. And if Dye is pissed off now due to not getting an extension, he'll be more pissed now by being traded to a team that won't be able to play him lol.

He would platoon with Drew in RF.

I would hate this deal on so many levels

    A. Dye is in an off year
    B. Dye doesn't want to platoon and could be an issue if he has to
    C. Masterson or Delcarmen are too good to give up. At this point in time, Delcarmen is the third best Sox RP and dependable in crunch time. Masterson is the fourth best Red Sox prospect and has been amazing in every level but A+ (in Lancaster, the worst pitcher's park in BASEBALL.). Pena is understandable, one of those two are not. In a market where Scott Linebrink gets three good prospects, Delcarmen alone is worth at least Dye, if not more.

I believe Dye has a partial no trade clause and would not go to a team that will not make him an everyday starter.

Well, let's hope he enacts it if this is true.

I definitely agree there. Pena for Dye is a reasonable switch, Delcarmen is way to good to be a mere throwin (same with Masterson.)

If Dye comes here, will he be replacing JD Drew?

Dye's primary role would be a lefty platoon mate for Drew. He's also DH/LF insurance for if Ortiz needs a lot of rest/minor surgery (a big rumor and he has been hurting) and supposedly the Sox guaranteed him 5 starts a week, and that would be tough without some DHing

Hey Fish, I caught a few minutes of the BBTN trade deadline stuff and Gammons said it wouldn't be Delcarmen but maybe someone like Craig Hansen.

Yes, the rumors I read said Hansen as well...Hansen and Pena.

I heard Lester and Pena for Contreras and Dye

Or I could just be wishing I heard that...

Hansen and Pena makes a lot more sense for Boston. Hansen seems to have turned into Ryan Wagner if I would use a Cincy reference. He is strugg-a-ling after being called up too soon.

If the Sox can really pull Hansen and WMP for Dye, and then Gabbard and Murphy for Gagne...hoo boy.

I am not obviously as familiar with the Hansen situation as you are, but I do agree that is makes a lot more sense. In the end, the potential winner could be the White Sox, but this is a deal that could help the Red Sox a lot more this year than it will hurt them.

I also read somewhere that Chicago might try to resign Dye, making them the official trade deadline tease of 2007 (first with Buerhle and then with Dye.)

Re: Jermaine Dye to switch from one Sox to the other?

According to Jayson Stark's sources, the Boston's latest offer for Jermaine Dye was Wily Mo Pena and Craig Hansen. The White Sox want Manny Delcarmen instead; perhaps the Red Sox will be more willing to do that if they complete the Eric Gagne trade. Otherwise, the White Sox may just take Pena and Hansen over the two draft picks they'd get if they kept Dye.
I really don't like this deal for Boston. Obviously they would have a surplus of outfielders with Dye and Drew sharing time in right field but it just seems like a meaningless deal to me.
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

Delcarmen's the breaking point. Unless Hansen gets his crap together, his peak is probably...what Manny Delcarmen is right now. This deal is probably dead, and I would have liked Dye...but not at the expense of Manny
