SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- It can't be announced until tomorrow night, after the expansion draft, but major-league sources said last night that the Red Sox and Florida Marlins have struck a deal in which Boston will receive closer Robb Nen in exchange for top pitching prospect Carl Pavano and two minor leaguers.

The deal was agreed upon by Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette and Marlins general manager Dave Dombrowski late yesterday afternoon, sources said.
"As far as I know, nothing's done," Red Sox spokesman Kevin Shea said last night. "Dan's still talking with a number of clubs." The other players in the deal were not disclosed. The Marlins had asked about top third-base prospects Cole Liniak and Wilton Veras, and outfielder Dernell Stenson. All three are considered among Boston's top prospects.
A day later, the Red Sox instead officially acquired Pedro Martinez for Carl Pavano and the Marlins traded Robb Nen to San Francisco.

And none of those top prospects.... became anything? Heh.

I guess Pavano's destiny was to be a marlin eventually, and then rip off the Empire. Novel material.

The Dernell Stenson story is very sad, if he's the guy I'm thinking about.

But Duquette prospects didn't often turn out well it seems. Man, that's an old article.

Yes, Stenson is the one you're thinking about. Four men were arrested and one of them got off on 25-to-life after he ratted on his partner, who will receive the death penalty.
