Johnny Damon won't be the only player making his return to Fenway tonight.

According to a major league source, the Red Sox have re-acquired Doug Mirabelli from the Padres in exchange for catcher Josh Bard, minor-league pitcher Cla Meredith, and cash (which figures to be in the six-figure range). The Yankees were also trying to acquire Mirabelli.

Mirabelli, who is flying to Boston from the West Coast, is expected to be in the starting lineup -- and catch Tim Wakefield -- for tonight’s Red Sox-Yankees game at Fenway.

I don't like the trade that much, Meredith is capable, Bard was getting better...but glad to see Dougie back

The Yankees were also trying to acquire Mirabelli.

I had seen enough of Bard, and don't think he was going to ever live up to his potential. I'm not crazy about getting rid of Meredith, but Bard really seemed out of his element catching Wakefield, and Mirabelli is the only guy out there with a proven history of catching Wakefield. I'm ok with the trade, but hope the Sox stop throwing all these prospects to other teams in deals every time we read the paper.

I think the trade works out well for both.

I'm a bit more comfortable with Loretta for Bard/Meredith/PTBNL (or cash) than I was Loretta for Doug.
