My only issue with the whole thing is he said it all privately not knowing he was being taped.

I mean, I get expecting a level of decorum from league owners and conduct and what not, but is it really fair to expect that to reach into their private lives just because somebody chooses to secretly tape them and give the tape to TSZ?

I mean, I won't shed a tear for Sterling because he's a jerk for more reasons than just what he said, but I nevertheless don't get it.

I agree with your thoughts. To me, what some asshole says in private should be just that, private. Does this shed light on his character? no, not really. It's just more public, but it was already pretty well known before hand (from what I've heard and read). I'm hardly any sort of legal expert, but as I attempted to point out in my previous post, I'm not sure how something said in private can be held against him in the manner that they are trying to do... again, had this been said (taped unknowingly or not) at an NBA sanctioned event, then by all means, go after him.

supposedly there's owner conduct in the NBA rules too, and Sterling can certainly be argued to have made the NBA look bad and that's what'll happen.

Which I'm sure Sterling will follow with a lawsuit himself.

This is possibly the only legal leg they have to stand on and perhaps you are right, but again, what happens behind closed doors is fair game if TMZ gets ahold of it? *shrug*

Well, everything in your first paragraph is true. But couldn't the NBA just as easily say, "well, we don't want to do business with you" and let him keep the Clippers, but essentially make them an independent team without a league? I can't imagine they'd be obligated to maintain business with a certain organization, considering contraction and expansion are allowed.

I thought about this already. I even heard someone on sports-talk radio say this is what they should/would do. It almost makes sense other than the fact that the league would have to cut ties with the Clippers, contract the team and redistribute the players or assign them directly to an expansion team that seriously needs to be in place by about the middle of June (draft). This also screws over the fans and season ticket holders as well as the all of the vendors and contractors that would be affected by a loss of games at their home arena. The economic loss and black eye that the league would take for that would be far worse than allowing what will likely be a court battle between Sterling and the NBA go on for a year or even two. That would give them time to get things set in motion if need be to get an expansion club and potential buyers in place.

Just my thoughts, I'm speaking as a fan of the game, not of the Clippers or Sterling.

I would venture a guess that this guy will do anything and everything he can to be a nuisance. A matter of pride, ego and arrogance. He comes off as being very full of himself and very unapologetic. If that's true, at 80 yrs old, he can afford to stick lawyers in a courtroom for a few years if need be, just to be that very nuisance.

ha, agreed. i dont have a knock on the guy up to this point, except for his robotic awfully read speech straight off the piece of paper. for all the shit about david stern, that guy could captivate any room he was in.

Whether they're "doing business" with him or dealing with him in some other fashion they're still having to deal with him in that scenario.

And imagine the kick to the groin the NBA gets if he wins the lawsuit?

That's all stuff you'd have to take into account if you want to go that route.

It probably is limited because I think they can get away with forcing him to sell regardless of anyone's opinion of it.

But since the topic of conversation was whether or not they'd choose to go the route of ousting the Clippers from the NBA and moving their players and coaches to a new NBA expansion team should they not be able to force him to sell.....well, I don't think they'd go to that extreme.
