NBA Fay Vincent: "Mark Cuban is a real problem in basketball"

Former MLB commissioner Fay Vincent frowns on idea of Mark Cuban as baseball owner - ESPN Dallas

“I don’t think Mr. Cuban’s been an easy partner or owner for David Stern, and that would put me on my guard if he were to come to baseball … George Steinbrenner was a real problem in baseball, and I think Mark Cuban is a real problem in basketball ... The rules are the rules. I think this enormous criticism — the screaming about officials, the kinds of things that got him fined by David — those are not actions of a sensible, responsible owner. I mean winning is not everything, and I’m afraid for some of these owners they get so carried away with winning they believe that’s the objective.”
Gee, I sure would hate it if Mark Cuban bought the Dodgers. Frank and Jamie McCourt are sensible, responsible owners who don't get so carried away with winning they believe that's the objective.

Vincent is a fucking idiot. Now it makes me wonder how the hell this guy became a commissioner? Isn't the number one objective in sports is to win? Dumb-ass.

You know Vincent had to have been a real putz of a commissioner when Bud Selig of all people was leading the charge to kick his ass out.

Whats the difference between Daddy Steinbrenner and what Cuban would do? Baseball seem to survive with Darth George in charge of the Yanks. I think Cuban in LA makes way to much $$$ sense for it NOT to at least be asked. Would he assume the debt? I think would be the one reason he wouldn't.

Marc Cuban needs to be in the DIEING sport of baseball. His energy and fan devotion would revitalize which ever city is purchased by him.

He may not be great at following the rules, and he wouldn't "fit in" with the rules set in 1903. But for the game of baseball his presence would be a welcome site for a sport that is losing talent to other more high profile sports.

Baseballs flaw is it's run by a bunch of tight asses who feel that "the purity of the game" is more important that it's overall fan appeal. But at this current rate MLB would be looking a large contraction of it's teams in the next decade. Fan interest and even interest in knothole baseball has declined exponentially over the last quarter century and it needs a forward thinker like Cuban if it intends to survive.

Cuban and LA seem like a great fit. Steinbrenner saved the Yankees and Cuban could do the same for the Dodgers. I don't see him being as involved in baseball where he is in basketball, not even close in fact.

Plus it's harder to run on the field in baseball than basketball lol

Dennis Gilbert is the name that keeps surfacing as the potential new owner but obviously Cuban would be the bolder, more exciting option for a franchise in need of a wake-up call.

I'm now realizing that I sound as though I'm talking about a baseball free agent crop instead of owners.

I wanted Cuban to buy the Cubs. I think he'd be great for baseball, and for the Dodgers.

If he ever gets in, is another story.

If thats the guy from the White Sox front office, he certainly be a "Bud" choice. Life inside the circles as a scout and a lot of ties to the LA area.

Yeah, that's him. He definitely has "Bud" choice written all over him. I just hope he's not another Jeff Moorad, who had to buy the Padres in installments, or on layaway, as Colin Cowherd called it.

Maybe work out a deal where he teams up with Cuban. Cuban can be "super fan" and that Gilbert guy can handle anything with MLB? Just a thought.

You never know with partnerships, though. We saw Nolan Ryan team up with the businessman Chuck Greenberg to buy the Rangers, and less than a year later Greenberg is selling his stake.

P.S. I really liked that quote by Cowherd - "The Padres were bought on layaway. Layaway! That's how college girls buy jeans!"
