Orioles Ink Izturis

Shortstop Cesar Izturis and the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to a deal, pending a physical.

The 28-year-old switch-hitter batted .263 with 24 stolen bases in 135 games for the Cardinals last season.

Known for his defense, Izturis won the 2004 NL Gold Glove award at shortstop.

The Baltimore Sun reported that Izturis will receive a two-year deal worth $6 million.

Good low risk signing by the O's. Izturis is a glove man and with the O's awful pitching, he is just what they needed. Anything with his bat is a bonus at this point in his career. He stole 24 bases last year which will be welcome. Add that to the defense he and Brian Roberts have up the middle and I like this deal. O's need to land a big free agent whether it be a pitcher or bat. Preferably a pitcher.

And Miguel Tejada was so bad, why?

As was said, this is nearly a riskless signing. Izturis will give the Oriole pitchers better defense than they have had in the past. He has pretty good range and a good arm. He should give the pitching staff a bit more confidence out there.
