But thats stupid. If you work hard to get 2000 points, the next person you give rep to, gets the same rep as you but didn't have to work as hard. Not that getting rep is hard work, but I think you see my point.Originally Posted by BlueDamsel

It's not always hard work just to get X number of posts. Anyone can make 2 word replies and one-liner retorts. And the person who makes a habbit of making such posts over and over and pads his post count in the post-padding games shouldn't have the same rep power as someone who makes 2000 meaningful posts. One of the main points of the "rep" system, and why I like it, is it gives a better gauge of a poster than post count, which is nothing more than the amount of times a poster hit the "reply" button. Of course, as everything in this world, the rep system also has its flaws. People can pad eachother to make themselves look good for instance, but it's at least a better indication than simple post count. But thats stupid. Exaclty. I was saying its a lot harder to get 2000 rep points than it is to make 2000 posts. Then the next guy you give rep to gets you 2000 points? Thats kinda lame.Originally Posted by HollywoodLeo
It doesn't exactly work like that. You get more rep power for post count and you get more rep power for the amount of positive rep you get. I don't know the exact ratios or whatever, but it's most definitely not a 1 post/+1 rep power thing, not even close. I imagine your rep power would go up more for positive rep than it would for post count, but i'm not really sure.Exaclty. I'm on another message board that just recently updated to this type, with the rep power and stuff, and I have ~11,500 posts over there and 53 rep points...my rep power is 16. So it's not exactly a 2,000 posts=2,000 rep power thing, which I agree would be riddiculous.

But thats not what I'm saying, and thats not the way BlueDamsel explained it. The way I understand it from this thread is that regardless of how many posts you have, the rep you give is based on (or equal to) the rep you've earned. If thats they way it works, then thats kinda lame. But we should display rep either way. Just to see who actually making quality posts.Originally Posted by HollywoodLeo

Well, as you've stated yourself, it's harder to earn rep than it is to make posts..so I'm confused why you think it's lame that the rep you give is based off the rep you earn. I honestly don't know exactly how it works, but if i'm reading BD's post correctly, and from what I do know, if you get more postiive rep you get more rep power. I do know it's not a 1 for 1 deal, so I don't see how it's really that lame. You get more positive rep then your "rep" means more. You get more negative rep, then your rep means less. But thats not what I'm saying, and thats not the way BlueDamsel explained it. If its 1-to-1 then its pointless. If not then it makes a little more sense. Either way we should have it displayed.Originally Posted by HollywoodLeo
I don't know if the amount of rep power you get is something the admin can edit or not, but if it's anything like my other forum, then it's most definitely not a 1 for 1 deal. I have 11,600+ posts over there, 58 rep points, and a rep power of 16.
That said, I also agree that the "rep power" should be displayed.
