"It's the Mets and then us," John Smoltz said as the Braves opened training camp about 100 miles away at Disney's Wide World of Sports. "They're definitely the favorites. No question."
"They're the best team we've had to face so far," Smoltz said. "On paper, they are better than the Marlins were or the Phillies were or the Mets of the past were. They look loaded."
With 14 division titles in a row, the Braves almost seem to enjoy being discounted going into a season. It gives them a shot to prove people wrong once more.
"Everyone mentions how we haven't done well against Atlanta," third baseman David Wright said. "But this is a new team now, so what does that matter?"
Still, winning can become a frame of mind.
"The Braves know what to do to win," said the 47-year-old Franco, lured away from Atlanta by a two-year contract. "The Mets have to learn."
"Winning and losing isn't just about talent," Randolph said.
The Braves couldn't agree more.
