"Lerew was the star of the day," Cox said after seeing the right-hander dominate hitters in batting practice. "Hopefully he can have those kind of days [consecutively], because he was as right on as you can possibly get."
Lerew, 23, decided before spring training that he wanted to compete for the closer job, after the Braves lost Kyle Farnsworth to free agency and failed to land an accomplished replacement.
"Hopefully I opened some eyes today," he said.
"I want them to remember what I can do. I'd like to be the closer. That's something I can do and have fun with."
He has a 93-to-97 mph fastball and sharp slider, and he's developing a split-finger pitch that could be special. He began throwing it last fall, and Lerew got valuable tips from new pitching coach Roger McDowell two weeks ago in Atlanta.
