If the Braves clinch the NL East title before Wednesday, there's a chance — perhaps even a strong likelihood — that John Smoltz won't pitch again until the first game of the division series.

Hindered recently by a sore right shoulder, the Braves veteran could skip his next scheduled start Wednesday against Colorado and get extended rest before the division series starts Oct. 4 or Oct. 5.
