John Smoltz has decided to pitch Wednesday after all. Kyle Davies will head to the pen for now.
Smoltz was expected to be pushed back to Friday after complaining of fatigue following his previous outing.

John Thomson (finger) will rejoin the rotation on Saturday after allowing one run in six innings for Double-A Mississippi on Monday.
Go ahead and activate him. Thomson missed nearly three months with a finger injury.

Chipper Jones underwent an MRI exam that showed a sprain to his right rotator cuff. He's out of the starting lineup for a sixth straight game tonight.
Jones can pinch-hit, but it doesn't sound like he'll see much action at third base this week. ''I need a relay man from third to first,'' he joked

Kyle Farnsworth dropped his appeal of a five-game suspension. He'll be eligible to return on Sunday.
Farnsworth is troubled by a sore back and was going to need a couple of days off anyway. The suspension was the result of his tackle of Jeremy Affeldt in a game against the Royals last month.

ATLANTA (AP) -- Adam LaRoche and Kelly Johnson drove in two runs apiece to back a strong outing by Horacio Ramirez, leading the Atlanta Braves past the San Francisco Giants 7-1 on Tuesday night.

Braves rookie Jeff Francoeur had four more hits -- a career best and his 12th multihit game since being called up from the minors July 7, raising his average to .432.

Ramirez (10-7) improved to 7-1 at Turner Field, allowing just six hits in 7 2-3 innings. He also had an RBI single.

The first-place Braves got off to a good start in their longest homestand of the season, a 12-game, 13-day stint at Turner Field against four NL West teams.

Atlanta scored four runs in the first off Brad Hennessey (4-4) and knocked out the Giants starter with three more runs in the third -- batting around both times.

In all, the Braves piled up 16 hits. All but one starter, third baseman Wilson Betemit, had at least one hit.

Andruw Jones reached base four times on two hits and two walks. He also made a diving catch on Edgardo Alfonzo's liner to end the sixth, preventing the Giants from scoring another run.

Hennessey had only himself to blame for the first-inning mess. With one out, he walked two straight hitters. Jones singled to load the bases, and LaRoche followed with a two-run double into the right-field corner.

Two rookies finished off the rally. Francoeur made it 3-0 with an infield single and Brian McCann drove home the fourth run with a single to right.

Francoeur singled leading off the third, but it appeared he would be stranded when Hennessey retired the next two hitters and got ahead 0-2 on Ramirez.

But the Braves' pitcher singled past shortstop on the next pitch, scoring Francoeur from second. Ramirez stopped at third on Rafael Furcal's double into the left-field corner, then both runners scored on Johnson's double to center.

Randy Winn attempted a diving catch, but the ball skimmed under his outstretched glove and bounced away, giving the Braves a 7-1 lead.

Hennessey was yanked after he walked the next hitter. He gave up nine hits, four walks and all seven runs in 2 2-3 innings.

The Giants scored their lone run off Ramirez in the third, putting together three straight hits with two outs. Lance Niekro, the nephew of 300-game winner and longtime Braves pitcher Phil Niekro, had an RBI single.Game notes
Braves LHP Mike Hampton, on the DL with a sore back, made his second rehab start in the Gulf Coast League. He went five scoreless innings. ... Ramirez reached 10 wins for the second time in his career. He went 12-4 two seasons ago. ... The lefty's ERA at home is 2.91, compared with 5.87 on the road. ... Niekro had three of the Giants' eight hits. Both his father, Joe, and uncle, Phil, pitched for the Braves. ... Braves 2B Marcus Giles had an eighth-inning single to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, best of his career.

Jeff Francoeur went 4-for-4 against the Giants tonight to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Francoeur has hit safely in 18 of the 21 games in which he's had an official at-bat. In those 21 games he's batting .432 with eight doubles and eight homers. His 16 strikeouts compared to zero walks so far mean he's going to slow down at some point, but he's absolutely putting on a show right now
