Front Runners For Peavy

According to the San Diego Union Tribune, the Padres "had no fewer than three" scouts watching Tommy Hanson's latest Arizona Fall League start in preparation for a possible Jake Peavy trade.
Hanson has been lights out in the AFL, allowing one hit in 8 2/3 innings, and is one of the league's better all-around pitching prospects. Several sources suggest that the Braves are currently front-runners for Peavy.

Clearly the Braves are the front runner for Peavy as they have the pieces to get a deal done and the right location. Peavy would like to play in Atlanta since its closest to Alabama where he is from. Braves desperately need an ace with Smoltz and Hudson possibly out for the entire '09 season. The Braves would like to give up Kelly Johnson over Yunel Escobar but since the Padres already have so many strikeout artists, they would likely prefer Escobar and move Khalil Greene.

Jar Jar is all they have right now. He's not going anywhere.

I meant Jar Jar would be all they would have behind Peavy. If they give him up, they would just have Peavy and that cannot be appealing for Peavy to want to go there. Are you suggesting that if Jar Jar's name is not mentioned, no deal? I think Escobar, Hanson and and another pitching prospect could definitely do the job.

If I were the Braves GM, I would have to put my foot down and say no Jar Jar on the table. He would be a solid #2 behind Peavy giving them the combo. No combo, no deal. That's just me plus without him would the Braves be all that much better than SD with just Peavy?

When Braves pitching prospect Tommy Hanson fired high-speed fastballs in an Arizona Fall League game recently, the Padres were all eyes. General Manager Kevin Towers has said young pitching likely will be the starting point for any trade involving Jake Peavy, and no fewer than three of his Padres scouts watched Hanson overmatch prospects from other organizations. Hanson's fastball got up to 95 mph and often reached 92-93 mph in the outing. A non-Padres scout who saw Hanson recently had this to say about the 6-foot-6, 210-pounder: "He has good stuff. Good curveball. He had command of the strike zone. Is he a No. 2 or No. 3 starter? Could be. His motion stays together pretty well. He is kind of a max-effort guy. It's not free and easy." The Braves, for their part, are saying they are not willing to trade Hanson.

To date Adam Wainwright is the only former Braves highly touted pitching prospect who's been a success in the big leagues.

The fact that he's playing for St. Louis today must be karma for the all those times Schuerholz pumped and dumped overrated goods (that means you, Bruce Chen) onto other teams.

From John Sickles.......regarding the Braves top prospects......

1) Jason Heyward, OF, Grade A-: A personal favorite, though he actually hit fewer homers than expected. Broad base of skills.
2) Frederick Freeman, 1B, Grade B+: Debating whether or not to move him up to A-. Not as broad a skill base as Heyward, but power and youth stand out.
3) Thomas Hanson, RHP, Grade B+: Looks good to me, though will need some Triple-A to put on the finishing touches. Number Two starter ceiling.
4) Jordan Schafer, OF, Grade B+: I should have put him on the Rotowire Top 100 list. Will be in the 50/50 for the book. Power, speed, defense, OBP, and played well without the juice.
5) Tyler Flowers, C, Grade B: Love the power and walks, main question is glove.
6) Cole Rohrbough, LHP, Grade B: Excellent ceiling. I cannot prove why objectively, but I worry a bit about his arm. Needs sharper command too.
7) Craig Kimbrel, RHP, Grade B: I hesitate to grade relief prospects this highly, but I can’t ignore his early dominance.
8) Gorkys Hernandez, OF, Grade B-: Would like to see more power, other skills coming along.
9) Kris Medlen, RHP, Grade B-: Am I overrating him? Looks like he could be a really good swingman.
10) Jeff Locke, LHP, Grade B-: I’ve liked him since he was in high school. Like Rohrbough, worry some about injuries.

Heyward, Hanson, Escobar & Flowers for Peavy/ Greene and they probably would have kept KT on the phone instead of hearing a dialtone
