Schuerholz named team president; Frank Wren GM

The Braves have called a Thursday press conference for 3:30 p.m. EST, with Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reporting that general manager John Schuerholz is expected to step down.
According to Rosenthal, long-time assistant Frank Wren is likely to replace him, but this is a big blow to the Braves. Schuerholz is a no-doubt Hall of Famer and one of the most successful GMs in baseball history.
Holy shit!! What the hell is going on this offseason so far? GM's and coaches getting fired and stepping down left and right. Sad to see this as he has been one of the best since he started and turned around a dismal franchise. Let's hope this new GM remembers how the Braves came to greatness with pitching and defense. This really sucks!!

I don't know the particulars of this, but I suppose it was done to protect Wren from possibly joining another team as GM.

Well I guess the President of the Braves is a better position? I don't know the structure of a ball club but I would think so.

For those who don't remember, Frank Wren was the former O's G.M. who once signed all those expensive free agent veterans, namely, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Delino DeShields, B.J. Surhoff, Mike Timlin, and the O's eventually dumped everyone except Belle to contenders and retreated to the AL East basement.

I am sure Schuerholz is still have his hand or say. I like this move for the Braves. It keeps him in house and just adds another mind to the organization. I applaud this move.

Well, if they work it like the Padres do then Wren will be doing all the work, but won't be able to officially get a move done without running it by Schuerholz first, who has the final say on whether or not a move is made.

In San Diego Kevin Towers does all the wheeling and dealing, but nothing gets approved without Sandy Alderson's ok. (Sandy, being the Padres team president.)

Don't know too much about Wren, but I do know he will have big shoes to fill - thankfully JS is staying w/the Braves, so he will still have his hand in the decisions....
