ATLANTA -- With their flurry of acquisitions Tuesday, the Braves left themselves with a roster dilemma on Wednesday. They solved it by designating Julio Franco for assignment.
Franco, who has hit .250 (9-for-36) since signing joining the Braves on July 20, will be available on the waiver wire for 72 hours. If not claimed by another organization, the 48-year-old first baseman could choose to accept a Minor League assignment from the Braves.

With the acquisition of Mark Teixeira, Franco would have played very sparingly, if at all, at first base. Scott Thorman now finds himself as Teixeira's backup.

While they thought about moving Thorman out instead, the Braves feared that they'd lose him since he's out of Minor League options. The 25-year-old Canadian is hitting .220 this year.

Franco, who will turn 49 on Aug. 23, signed with the Braves after being designated for assignment by the Mets earlier this month.

Everyone had to see this coming with Tex's arrival...this was as obvious as it gets. I think his career is through now.

What did you expect? It was either him or Thorman.

And Franco is probably more likely to clear waives than Thorman.
