Jeff Francoeur- This rookie has arrived to the “show” and made an instant impact. He is one of those coveted “toolsy” players we always hear about, with 30/30 potential and solid defensive skills. Well, Jeff is living up to the hype so far in his VERY young career. Talk about a hot start, the big right hander is hitting a blistering .413 and showing some pop with 6 bombs and 16 RBI’s in only 46 at bats. He is a hot pick up in all leagues and is providing instant offense at the moment. It’s definitely prudent to ride the youngster while he is this sizzling and enjoy the fine stats he is producing. Of course, he will not stay this hot for long and there are some red flags to take note of. The 21 year old has exactly ZERO walks so far which is never a good sign. What is even more disconcerting is the fact that he has struck out 12 times already. A 12/0 K/BB rate is a tad alarming, so be prepared for some struggles. Jeff is a great keeper/dynasty player, but do not count on him to save your season this year.

Hampton update:

Mike Hampton (back) allowed one run in four innings tonight in his rehab start for Triple-A Richmond.
Carlos Pena singled in a run in the first for Toledo. Hampton retired the final seven men he faced. Even though the lefty only missed a couple of weeks, the Braves are planning on having him make one more rehab start before he rejoins the rotation

Smoltzie going to get some more rest, according to Cox:


Because he's a little tired, John Smoltz will likely get a couple of extra days off before his next start.
Smoltz is expected to pitch Friday rather than Wednesday. ''I think it makes sense to do something like this,'' manager Bobby Cox said. ''It's not like he's going to miss a start or something. It just gets him some more rest.''

Kyle Davies is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday instead of John Smotlz.
Smoltz will go Friday and more help is on the way, as Mike Hampton and John Thomson could activated next weekend

- Jeff Francoeur’s Double-A numbers said he wasn’t ready to hit in the majors yet. So all he’s done is come up with eight homers, eight doubles and 15 singles in 22 games. His ultra-aggressive approach at the plate should allow NL pitchers to catch up with him at some point. He’s a future All-Star, but I don’t think he’s going to reach that level until 2007 at the earliest. … Braves GM John Schuerholz made perhaps the best pickup at the trade deadline when he got Kyle Farnsworth for a smaller price than the Marlins paid for Ron Villone. Chris Reitsma shouldn’t have a lot to worry about; even accounting for the game-winning grand slam to David Eckstein on Sunday, he’s been very good as a closer. Farnsworth seemed to be adapting to ninth-inning duties OK in Detroit, but a setup role remains ideal for him. … Brian McCann is taking playing time against right-handers away from Johnny Estrada, who remains plagued by a sore shoulder. McCann’s defense has been better than expected since arriving, and it’s starting to look like he’s played his last game in the minors. He’s never going to be an exceptional defender, but the Braves can put up with some miscues in order to keep his bat around.
