The Diamondbacks believe center field prospect Chris Young, whom they are acquiring from the Chicago White Sox in the Vazquez deal, likely needs more time in minors, so Lofton could serve as a temporary stopgap.
It is unlikely the team would go beyond a one-year deal with Lofton, a former baseball and basketball player at the University of Arizona.
