D-backs starter Randy Johnson was diagnosed with a herniated disk in his back Tuesday, and a timetable for his return will be determined in the coming days. Johnson will play catch Tuesday and long toss Wednesday. How he feels after those sessions will determine the schedule Arizona puts him on as he prepares for a return.
D-backs manager Bob Melvin said it's "probably a stretch" to get Johnson ready for a start June 26 against the Dodgers, the day he is eligible to return from the disabled list and his original projected return date.
Johnson is injured in the same area in his back that caused him to pitch through pain last year with the Yankees. Melvin said Johnson feels better now than he did last season.
