    Rangers The Texas Rangers auction

Bob Nightengale tweets: (in order from top to bottom)
Courtroom is so crowded the Judge now ordered that there are too many attorneys in the room.

Highlight of day was Greenberg's lawyer and creditors' lawyer screaming obscenities at one another in hallway.

The circus only gets nuttier. Mark Cuban now signing autographs and having his pic taken with fans in courtroom hallway.

Greenberg and Ryan bid $320 million, $2 million more than Cuban

    Cuban bids $335 mill

Dream scenario is Cuban buys the team. Then installs Ryan as Lord Master of Arlington.

Yeah, if that happens, Ryan can pull the knife out of Greenberg's back while he's at it.

Regardless of who wins the bid, Nolan has proven he knows what he is doing and he is doing one helluva job!

Greenberg and Ryan get them for $385 million (plus all the debt the club owes.)

Now how likely is it that the Rangers resign Lee and keep him out of pinstripes?

I think its very unlikely he stays in Texas. The Rangers just won a huge bud for a franchise, don't see them entering another with the Yankees. Ryan wants to keep Hamilton around more than anything despite his age.

Hamilton, as amazing as he is, just screams of someone who could get a 4 or 5 year deal and really burn the team with an injury or simply his body breaking down.

That's the beauty of the DH and the AL, where the broken can go to play.

Chuck Greenberg exhales after he and Nolan Ryan outlast Mark Cuban and win Texas Rangers' bid - Daily Pitch: MLB News, Standings, Schedules & More - USATODAY.com

Greenberg and Cuban went toe-to-toe for nearly 15 hours, and once Greenberg elevated his cash bid to $385 million, Cuban looked at him.

"He winked, and gave me this nod,'' Greenberg said in the bar celebration. "I knew then that we did it. He couldn't have been more gracious. He pushed us hard. I have respect for the way he stayed in this thing.''

Cuban said: "We're disappointed we didn't win. But we accomplished a lot what we wanted to accomplish. This will allow them to put more money on the field instead of third parties.''

When asked if he would still be interested one day in purchasing a major-league team, Cuban said: "We'll have to see. Hold on, I just got a call from Jamie McCourt [co-owner of the Los Angles Dodgers].''

Cuban laughed, but while he was on his way home in defeat, Greenberg and his staff were celebrating.

How would you feel about Cuban owning the Dodgers?

    Re: The Texas Rangers auction

It's no secret that MLB was rooting all the way for Nolan Ryan to win, but it's very curious that Cuban/Crane were neck-in-neck in the bidding war with Ryan/Greenberg and all of a sudden Cuban/Crane conceded. Surely, Cuban could have covered the $10 to $12 million break up fee that would have been owed to Ryan/Greenberg. It could be that MLB promised Cuban a purchase toward a team in the future in exchange for dropping out and letting Ryan have the Rangers. At the very least Cuban has established himself through his bid for the Rangers as an apprentice member of the baseball owners' club, and that's the same path McCourt got into the club.

I am guessing Mark Cuban didn't want to pay A Rod?

That's an interesting thought. First off, Ryan and Greenberg winning is a good story. Good for Ryan and therefore good for the MLB. Secondly, for Cuban to play a part in the story, even if the outcome was known in advance, makes the story better and establishes Cuban's desire. Not saying that's how it went down...
