The game to watch

This is a discussion on The game to watch within the St. Louis Cardinals forum; That's all cute and all but a veteran closer is what they needed. Again, Perez should be doing what Motte ...

Franklin blew 8 saves in 25 chances. Chris Perez should be the closer. He will be our closer in the future, and he can do it now. He will be better than Franklin.

Franklin blew four more games than Perez in more chances!!! Perez should not be closing now, Perez COULD be the closer in the future. All the evidence we have now says he is not a good closer. Its not debatable right now!! You said the same stuff about Motte and he is now where he belongs, gaining experience in the early innings. Franklin is better off setting up and you will never hear me say anything different but for right now, he is the best they got and its completely sad. I take that back, Reyes is probably the nest they have.

I've always wanted Perez to be the closer over Motte. Since Perez was in the minors, I would prefer Motte close than Franklin. As for blowing only 4 more games in more chances... he is the more experienced pitcher. He should be a lot better, but he isn't. Fuentes wasn't a good closer in his first year either, but he is the guy that you thought they should have given $33Mil.

But there is nothing to suggest Perez will be a good closer!! Nothing last year was impressive! And yes, Fuentes did do well in his first year as closer. He had 31 saves and only 3 blown saves. He was a setup man for a few years before that just like Perez and Motte should be doing. And you will be wanting the Cards to have signed Fuentes after another year of the Cardinals missing the playoffs because of blown leads yet again!!

In his first 2 years in the Majors (about 38 innings) he did a lot worse than Perez did last year. He wasn't even the closer then, but Perez was only out of need. Perez pitched better in a more difficult role than Fuentes did when he first came up.

Nit pick all you want, doesn't change that Perez wasn't that impressive last year and nothing suggests he should be closing right now. Fuentes' first year has no comparison to Perez's. At least Fuentes' manager was smart enough to make him a setup man before throwing him into the closer's role to cost his team games. And it makes no ****ing difference now since Fuentes is not a rookie and would be a better option for the 9th!

Fuentes is doing so well right now. Your right! What is he at...1 blown save in 3 chances with a 12.00 ERA?

Less blown saves than the Cards At least the Cards would have relievers that know what their roles are instead of the mess they have now!

I hope so, because he makes more than the Cards entire bullpen makes. Perez should be in the game soon, so we will see how he does. Then we can see how long it takes for him to become the closer.

Perez walked the first guy, and struck out the 2nd guy he faced. 1 man on base and one out.

Yeah too bad or else he would have walked two and gave up a three run homer. Good to see LaRussa using him in the correct situation, a four run lead and in the 7th

It's only his first day back in the Majors. Give him a little time, and he will win back the closer job.
