Re: Worried About Young?

I'm never overly concerned about poor performances from pitchers in ST who have a spot in the rotation locked.

He could be trying out some new pitches for all we know.

This wouldn't be the first time Chris Young had atrocious numbers in ST only to go on to have a good season.

The velocity being so off doesn't concern you either?

Didn't realize the velocity was off. (Haven't been paying attention to ST as much as I usually do, only knew he was having a poor ST because you posted this thread.)

That could be a bit of a concern.

edit: It'd help if I would have read your first post a bit closer.

Re: Worried About Young?

If it's still down mid way through April I'll be concerned.....could be just a case of late spring dead arm.......but it could also be something else just as easily unfortunately

Young pitched a beauty tonight so I guess that answers my question.

Re: Worried About Young?

Another strong outing for CY, but I think his velocity was down a bit.

Still, 7 IP, 0 ERs (1 unearned)

He was 89-91 on the gun again........all game........at least according to the stadium gun which had Lincecum between 91-94mph all day

Re: Worried About Young?

Maybe I was wrong about the velocity?

I was just going off the announcers repeatedly saying he was throwing 88 mph fastballs in the process of stating that you don't need to throw high heat to be effective.

Re: Worried About Young?

Young hasn't done anything to be concerned about so far that's for sure.

Lincecum topped out at 96 mph but his velocity on average is down from last year. His command concerns me more.

Re: Worried About Young?

A lot of pitchers can lose about .5-1mph once they hit about 30. I haven't watched Young this year, but perhaps he has just altered his delivery a bit and isn't quite hitting what he used to on the gun. Harang is actually very similar to Young, both are about the same age, both are very tall, both had miserable springs, and both have started the season off fantastically. Harang was only hitting 88-91 mph (on Opening Day he was hitting 93 mph), but then again when he was hitting 89 he pitched a 3 hitter with fantastic pitch efficiency so I could careless what he was hitting on the gun. Young is pitching great and getting strikeouts so whatever he must be doing must be working.

Re: Worried About Young?

I expect CY's velocity to dip toward the end of April as the dead arm phase kicks in.....then go back up.......he looks outstanding so far......knock on wood......his velocity is not a concern IMO at this point.....dead issue

Re: Worried About Young?

He wasn't so good today.

But, then again, I almost never expect a flyball pitcher to fare well in a home run park like Citizen's Bank.

I wasn't able to watch the game. How was his velocity and control?
