    Zito to the Gnats

    7 years, 17 mil per.

Now I get to hear you all tell me how bad of a signing it was while Zito shuts us out. Nice going Moores and co., he would've signed a similar deal worth only 16 per for us easily.

I thought it was a pretty good signing. They have the money, so why not.

What makes you believe he'd sign one for 16 per when San Fran was offering more than that?

lol don't forget the option 8th year, which is guaranteed if he hits certain marks....and while Zito is a good p/u....this contract is horrible....attempting to argue to the contrary is an exercise in stupidity....

it was 7/126 or 18M/yr. w/ a guaranteed option bringing it to 8/144M....in no way can this be considered a good contract.....but it is an excellent p/u....price is out of control though....

Why not? Well their team is pretty old, which mean they are going to need to replace a bunch of guys in the near future, and from what I remember that farm system isn't exactly full up with talent....so while it wont handcuff them, it will be a factor in their future, at least for the next 8 years...

Considering they lost Schmidt, this is really only a slight improvement for the Giants.

Because he has publicly stated that he would like to play in San Diego, and I doubt 1 million a year is going to change that preference when making multiple millions already.

We can give Maddux what's going to be 10 million, or he'll suck and make 8, (for the next two years, is it? I honestly can't remember) but we can't give a 26 year old Cy Young FLYBALL pitcher who is LEFTHANDED 17 million per year. And four years from now when Zito is making 17 million a season and Adam Harang and slightlyabovemediocre company are raking in 20+, we'll then be explaining why signing the next best free agent pitcher when having the means to do so is "so ridiculous".

Makes so much sense it hurts.

Can you link me to a quote of Zito saying, in a non-sarcastic tone, that he really wants to play in San Diego?

The public quote I believe you are alluding to is the one in which he stated something along the lines of "There's a good chance I'll be pitching here [PetCo] next year." the quote in which he went on to state that he'll be pitching somewhere next year (2007) and there's a fair chance that means he might pitch a game in San Diego.

The guy hired Scott Boras, it's obvious he wanted to go to whomever was willing to pay him the most.

I ignored the latter portion of your post as it becomes irrelevant once you realize Zito was going to whomever offered the most.

Hollywood's right, if the Mets offered that kind of money before the Giants, we'd be talking about Zito going to the Mets. Money talks, he's a Boras guy remember.

He's not 26 he's 28..........It wasn't 17M/yr it was 18M/yr w/ a guaranteed option for an 8th year making the whole contract worth 144M. I would love to have had Zito, but we're not even close to able to pay that kind of money....and knowing now that there is still someone out there that actually thinks we had a chance to offer the same contract is painful.....It's sad to think that there are Padre fans still out there that just don't get it.....

Well considering Zito is younger with a lower career ERA and Mr. Reliable, its more than a slight improvement. Its one helluva a contract for a guy who pitches every 5th day but it had to be done. This allows the Giants to trade some of our young guys to get pieces we need on down the road. The Giants farm system might not have the elite prospects but their teams just keep winning for some reason. The Giants minor league teams were the best and we have some pretty good looking prospects.
