We also just acquired C Curtis Thigpen from the Jays for a player to be named/$$, I guess to offer some backup support besides Powell and Galarraga.

Re: 2009 Season News

apparently, Duke is having surgery.

Duchscherer to have elbow surgery, out at least a month - ESPN

PHOENIX -- Justin Duchscherer will have arthroscopic elbow surgery next week, likely causing the Oakland Athletics' two-time All-Star to miss at least the first month of the season.

Manager Bob Geren announced the surgery on Friday, but he said the team has not yet determined when or where Duchscherer will have the operation. He also said the A's won't know how long Duchscherer will be out until after the surgery. Typically, a pitcher would miss at least six weeks with an arthroscopic procedure on his elbow.
and so it continues (the injury bug that has plagued the A's the last few years).

Do you know how long Duke will be out? Thats disappointing considering his strong breakout season in 2008.

Sucks to hear about Duke but we all saw this coming. It will be interesting to see how the rotation fills out.

AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH I'm about to rip my hair out. They said mid-May is the earliest he'll be back. Not cool.

Chavez is also scheduled to start in tomorrow's game against the Rockies... we might have our entire starting infield starting the game tomorrow. How exciting.

Re: 2009 Season News

Nomar Garciaparra hit a solo homer in his lone at-bat Friday against the Padres.

Eric Chavez (shoulder) went 0-for-2 Friday in his first appearance of the spring at third base.

Joey Devine allowed a run in an inning Friday in his return from a sore elbow.

Trevor Cahill gave up four runs in four innings Friday in a loss to the Padres.

Re: 2009 Season News

now it appears Devine is heading to the DL. I'm getting really sick and tired of the constant health issues with this team.

SFGate: Oakland Athletics : The Drumbeat : More health issues for Devine?

Joey Devine came out of today's game with the bases loaded in the eighth, so I asked manager Bob Geren afterward if everything is OK with the A's closer/co-closer.

"His arm didn't feel 100 percent," Geren said.

Geren said Devine's pitch count had reached around 20, and his velocity was down a bit. When I pressed him about the state of Devine's elbow, he said that according to Devine, "It just didn't feel quite right."

Devine missed more than two weeks with a sore elbow earlier in the month. If this is a significant flareup of that injury, then Devine might be a DL candidate to start the season.

In that case, Andrew Bailey's chances increase, even though he is a non-roster player. The A's don't have many extra short-inning-type relievers left in camp and Bailey, a 24-year-old right-hander, still hasn't allowed a run.
Bailey has been impressive so far, but it's just ST.

That's why you can never have too much pitching.
