Shouldn't a new word for fail be Minaya? He's the idiot that gave this ill-advised deal. I love the MLBTR.com article on it because it says "The contract was fairly well-received in the media at the time." Not by this guy it wasn't.

There was a time last season after the dugout fiasco that I was hearing of Zambrano for Perez and Castillo rumors.

Thank fucking god that never happened.

The contract stunk, we all knew that (except for Minaya) so its not surprising... although I don't think the Perez deal was ever expected to result in something as pathetic as it did. And if this is the last we hear from Perez, we can all agree that 2004 was a pretty amazing season (and it made it easy to rip on San Diego after that deal.)

    Not to sidetrack, but I don't know how I don't know/remember this:
When the Mets cut bait with Bonilla after the 1999 season, they were on the hook for $5.9 million. Instead, the Mets agreed to pay Bonilla $29.8 million between 2011 and 2035. Those annual $1,193,248.20 payments begin July 1.
    Hohohoholy shit.

As if you still wouldn't prefer Jason Bay and Oliver Perez during the timespan that Brian Giles became a shell of his former self.

Oh absolutely. I spent a few offseasons in fear of the Reds signing or acquiring Giles, so there is no doubt about the Pirates cleaning up in that deal.
