Royals Royals acquire Santana for career minor leaguer

Royals acquired RHP Ervin Santana and cash from the Angels for LHP Brandon Sisk.
The Angels exercised Santana's $13 million option for 2013 just before striking the deal and will cover some of that salary as part of the trade agreement. Santana, a 29-year-old right-hander, has been dominant in the past and can usually be counted on for close to 200 innings in a given season. But he had a pretty rough 2012 campaign. Sisk is a 27-year-old career minor leaguer, so the only real risk for Kansas City is monetary.

Not a bad deal for KC, as they probably wouldn't have been able to attract this good of a pitcher in free agency. 12 mill, risk free, and if he doesn't work out, you trade him at the deadline. I like the deal for KC.

    Sisk rhymes with risk, too.

So, Haren is being shopped too. Perhaps they'll get more than free for him.

especially on a 1 yr deal... they have a lot of good minor leaguers that are a yr or 2 away so getting a stop-gap makes a ton of sense

Haren should get much more than Santana.

Wait...so rather than simply cutting Santana and keeping the entire $13 million in savings, they're paying Kansas City to take him and all they're getting back for their money is a 27-year old career minor leaguer?!

    BWAHAHAHA!!!

Wouldnt there be a buyout if they didnt exercize the option? That's generally SOP with options.

There usually is, so the buyout most have been higher than what they are paying. Still funny to think.
