Red Sox TJ Surgery for Lackey?

Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reports that John Lackey needs Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery.
Can it get any worse for the 33-year-old right-hander? He's posted a dreadful 5.26 ERA and 1.50 WHIP since signing a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Red Sox in December of 2009, and will now miss all of the 2012 season. The surgery will trigger a clause in Lackey's contract that gives Boston a 2015 club option at the major league minimum. Perhaps that'll come in handy down the road.
Wow! It has just rained shit all over Lackey ever since he signed that contract with Boston. Cherington will have a tough first offseason, that's for sure.

Estes got that directly from the press conference, that was pretty much the bombshell that Cherington dropped right at the end.

Addition by subtraction. And karma hunts people down Lackey.

This helps the Sox more than it hurts. How lucky for them. What a first break for Cherington.

Don't they still have to pay the poor soul when he's on the DL? I know he is terrible, but doesn't having 15.25 million dollars on the DL kinda hurt, they could use that somewhere right?

we have an option to get him the year after for the league minimum if he went on the DL for extended time frame... so yes we pay him but we get an extra year out of it
