Not much of a rivalry when one team can't seem to beat the other.

it doesn't matter when the Yankees can still win the division even without beating the Red Sox.

I must say, it's quite nice to be only 1 game back now without having beat the Sox once. However, it's probably the most frustrating thing to know that the Sox have pretty much killed every starting pitcher that has taken the mound against them. As a Yankee fan, I don't think I have ever hated the Sox more than this year. It's just the most frustrating thing to watch. Here's to hoping CC can pull it out tonight for the first one.

The reason why is simple...strength of schedule. We've already taken both west coast trips and if I'm not mistaken you guys haven't taken 1 yet so no LAA or red hot Oakland for you. Also don't remember you playing the AL Central Tigers either...

We haven't played any of the bad teams (KC, White Sox, Orioles) when the whole schedule evens out we'll have a much bigger lead if u guys don't start improving

Obviously it's still a rivalry, but the more one sided this becomes(and since about 2004, the Red Sox have been much better overall), the more Sox/Yanks will risk falling back to the pack in terms of rivalries. I mean, Mets/Phillies is a growing rivalry, and it's already pretty good. If the Yankees don't eventually learn to beat the Sox...I don't think you'd be able to consider it the #1 rivalry in baseball anymore(But I do think the Yankees will figure it out eventually).

I don't think this even has a chance to be knocked from its pedestal as #1 rivalry in baseball for a long time. If one of the teams eventually becomes a bottomfeeder ala Kansas City, yes it won't be anymore. But for now it's still at the top

The rivalry makes me enjoy Burnett's contract even more.

Is that the same Burnett whose contract was included in my 5 worst contracts? or was that me when I said that Wang was terrible in ST...

LJ, this is still the #1 rivalry... it was meant as a joke. It has been, and will be forever. This is the 1st time in almost 100 years the Sox have won 7 in a row against the Yankees, and a couple years ago the yankees won 5 in a row at Fenway... so its not ever going to be replaced as the #1 rivalry.

Forbes magazine ranked the Dodgers/Giants rivalry as the best of all time This is still a rivalry but not as big of one as ESPN wants to think it is.

Forbes also ranked head coaches and Belicheck and Francona were near the bottom... let them stick to financial stuff where they belong

bingo.. lol
i mean, it's still a rivaly for yanks/sox fans, but for everyone else, i think its beginning to be more like.. who cares? the games havent even been close, and the yankees will still find a way to win the division in the end... and boston the wild card

then they'll probably lose to Boston in the playoffs anyway, while most of their fans are still drunk off the kool-aid. -aid!

Re: Is Sox-Yanks still a rivalry?

I didn't say that it's not the #1 rivalry....but if the next 15-20 years is like the last 5, with the Yankees struggling, not winning anything, and losing constantly to the Red Sox, and the Red Sox start winning twice every 5-10 years, it'll start to slip. Sox and Yanks fans will still call it #1, but it wont be if the races and games aren't close for a prolonged period of time.

Yes it is still #1 and they will both make the playoffs, yes in still the toughest division in baseball.
But from a personal point of view it sure has been sweet to see us beat them in so many games this year.
The real question is how will it play out in the later part of the season, and we certainly can't forget the Rays and even Toronto. GO SOX !!
