Say what you will about the guy, but he was a damn good pitcher who had some very dominating games and memorable postseason action to say the least.
    No, you're gay for Moleman.

Time to make the thread lively. (Even if it is a discussion we've had before.)

    Re: Curt Schilling retires

I like that he announced his retirement via his blog. Who needs press conferences anymore. The only way it could have been better is if he'd done it via Twitter.

now he'll run for office. HoF? no, but I'm sure he'll eventually get in just like Rice due to the Red Sox factor.

    Re: Curt Schilling retires

MLB Network will sign him any minute now. Schilling had a damn good career and was one of the nest post season pitchers of all-time. HOFer? I'd say borderline right now just like Blyleven.

    Re: Curt Schilling retires

I kinda like the way he didn't bring press or attention to himself, simply announcing his retirement on his blog, and being done with it.

As for the HoF? I'm still up in the air about it. I lean towards yes, because of 200+ wins(in 5 man roatation days), 3000+ K's, great postseason record, 3 WS Rings, 4 WS Appearances, and came in 2nd in the CY voting 3 times(losing to Randy Johnson, a first ballot HOFer all 3 times). I'd put him in tenatively.

HOF no doubt about it, and the 3K will be the factor, help leading a new franchise the D'Backs to the WS and in contention will be a factor, not just playing for the Red Sox.

I'd say he makes it. And I think he should. I hate the man's guts, but I absolutely think he deserves to be in the HOF

    Re: Curt Schilling retires

Its iffy if he gets in. Certainly not right away. He has a few things going against him:

#1 Amount of wins, yes that really shouldnt be a primary focus, and its not, but he does have less wins than Blyleven, Moyer, Jack Morris, Tommy john, those guys.

#2 his stats pale in comparison to the Big 4 of this generation. And he doesnt have the 300 that Glavine has

#3 His greatness didnt last very long. He was average at best until he was 30.

#4 Many media people hate his guts. That shouldnt really matter, but it does. He's a borderline case anyways.

Why he just may get in:
#1 Postseason. One of the best postseason pitchers ever.

    #2 3000K's, 3 championship rings. Awesome K/BB ratio.

#3 pretty similar stats to John Smoltz, who should get in as well.

Not sure. Based solely on his post season games, no doubt about it. His win total over a long career does not say dominance to me, however. It tells me that he was a very good pitcher, not a HOFer.
If Blyleven makes it in, I would say that Schilling should.
As to similar stats to Smoltz, you may be forgetting Smoltz' save totals. He was a closer for several years. Schilling didn't do that. Smoltz is a lock, IMO.

Before I get to Schilling, Jim Rice has been the biggest HOF snub for a long time, some of his stats.

    11 Seasons with 20+ homers
8 Seasons with 100+ RBI (Also had years with 139 and 130)
11 Season with 20+ Doubles (Had years with 39 doubles (2x) and 34)
    2 Years with 15+ Triples
9 Years with OPS above .875 (Years with .977 and .970)
    6 Top 5 MVP Finishes (Winning 1x)
    8 All-Star Games
    2 Silver Sluggers

    Thats HOF worthy to me.

Schilling is an interesting case cause he was very average until he turned 30, I think he gets in cause he has similar #'s as Smoltz and he led 2 franchises to their first WS titles (either ever or in one hell of a long time) and was one of the best clutch pitchers the game has ever seen. I wouldn't be up-in-arms like I was about Rice if he didn't get in but I think he does deserve a spot

    Re: Curt Schilling retires

my point wasn't to debate Rice. my point was that he got in the HoF in part because he was on the Red Sox thanks to the media. If he played for KC or a team like that, he wouldn't have gotten the same late push. I'm saying that Schilling will get in regardless due to that part as well...whether or not he truly deserves it. I wasn't saying he only achieved stuff while on the Red Sox either. The point was that the media that hypes up the Red Sox will push and push until he gets in.
